Just 15 km from Pahalgam, this lush riverside valley earned its current name after the 1983 Bollywood film "Betaab" was shot here. Snow-capped peaks rise on every side, the Lidder river crashes through the centre, and manicured lawns make it the perfect place for a picnic, a pony ride or a leisurely walk among the deodar groves.
Twelve kilometres up the Lidder from Pahalgam at 2,400 m, Aru is a tiny shepherds' village set against the soaring Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar–Marsar peaks. The trailhead for some of Kashmir's most spectacular treks, Aru also offers gentle horse-back rides, log-cabin stays and meadows that stay green from May through October.
Sixteen kilometres beyond Pahalgam at 2,895 m, Chandanwari is the traditional starting point of the Amarnath Yatra and home to a year-round snow bridge over the Lidder. Its silver birch forests, snowmelt streams and pony trails to Sheshnag Lake make it a rewarding day-trip even outside the pilgrimage season.
Often nicknamed "Mini Switzerland", Baisaran is a sweeping pine-rimmed meadow 5 km uphill from Pahalgam town at 2,400 m. The hour-long pony ride climbs through dense forest before opening onto rolling green slopes where you can zorb, zip-line or simply sit on the grass with views of the Lidder gorge stretching below.
A high-altitude glacial lake at 3,684 m on the ridge above Baisaran, Tulian is a moderate full-day trek that rewards you with mirror-clear water frozen for half the year and fringed by 5,000-m peaks the rest. Far from the tourist trail, it remains one of Kashmir's most pristine alpine destinations.
The Lidder is the soul of Pahalgam — a 73-km glacier-fed river born at the Kolahoi Glacier that races through the valley in roaring rapids and mirror-still pools. White-water rafting, trout fishing, and quiet riverside walks under the willow trees are the most popular ways to spend an afternoon along its banks.
